Word Counter and Character Counter
Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines as you type, with reading and speaking time alongside them. The keyword density table shows which terms carry the text, so you can check an article says what you think it says before it goes live.

Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Anything separated by spaces or line breaks counts as one word, which is how a word processor counts. A hyphenated term such as well-known is one word, and so is a contraction such as don't.
Why does the character count differ from another tool?
Most counters report UTF-16 code units, so an emoji counts as two and an accented letter can count as two. This one counts what you actually see, so an emoji is one character. The difference only shows up on emoji, accents and non-Latin scripts.
How is reading time worked out?
Words divided by 225 a minute for reading and 130 a minute for speaking. Those are averages for prose, so treat them as an estimate: dense technical text reads slower and dialogue reads faster.
What is keyword density for?
It shows which terms you repeat most, as a share of the whole text. It is useful for spotting a page that says nothing about its own topic, and for catching the opposite problem of repeating one phrase so often the writing reads as spam.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is counted inside this tab, so the text never leaves your browser and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
